What does it mean to be a twin? PDF Print E-mail

From observations of our twins and talking to adult twins, we offer these insights, from both sides of the coin:

  • They get a lot of attention.
  • They have a companion of the same age and usually the same general interests.
  • They can borrow each other's clothes, toys, etc.

However...
  • The closeness of twinship can lead to a feeling of lost identity.
  • If identical, it's hard to tell them apart for family and friends.
  • Disputes over personal belongings, friends, and shared activities can be common.
  • Too much public attention.
  • Too many comparisons.
  • Competition between the two.

Even though being a twin can have its difficulties, it can be a fun and happy experience for our children. It's up to the parents to help them find the balance between dependence and companionship.
